From telephone to weblog

Once upon a time in 1876, a Scottish by the name of Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone at the age of 29. The following year, he started the Bell telephone company.

Fast forward to the 21st century... More than one century later, as mankind continued their compelling desire to communicate, the voice mail system which complimented the telephone was developed. A voice mail system supports audio where users can leave spoken messages for one another and listen to the messages by executing the appropriate command.

As the desire to communicate became more intense, other means of communication came about. Of the many types of communication systems that were developed (telex, fax), the one media which created the biggest impact is no doubt the electronic mail or simply email.

The first email was sent in 1971 by the US Dept of Defence which did many research and development into computer networks for their military use although the research was not entirely oriented only to the military product. Their research resulted in ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) which is the forerunner to today's global Internet.

Fast forward again to the mid 80's, many companies began to connect their central computerised systems (hosts) to branch offices and subsidiaries. Employees were able to send and receive emails to/from other employees of that company on a world-wide basis. This era saw the phenomenal growth of personal computers which was part of a catalyst for pushing forward new networking technologies.

From stand alone PCs to terminal based PCs to PCs connected to the Internet. From the intention to create a military product to academic and now widely used for commercial purpose, the email is probably one of the greatest invention of the century.

As the Internet became more accessible and made available to more people, both private or through company connections, the number of email users stands over... I don't know, you tell me. In 1998, more than 6.5 million email messages were transmitted per minute in the US alone! That's 3.4 trillion emails delivered to 81 million email users in United States.

As the Internet continue to prosper, mankind can never get enough head satisfaction. Modern sophisticated men and women continue their quest for better communication. But this time with a slight twist. They needed to share it with the world. Add a lil bit morespice personal touch into it. This time, they made it personal. A reflection of what they think, what they feel, what they want to express to literally share with the rest of the world. The Weblog (Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year 2004) was erected... and the rest is history.
