Reunion Dinner

Every year on the eve of the Lunar New Year we will have steamboat for our reunion dinner. But why do most Chinese families here serve steamboat as their reunion dinner you may ask? Ahem... in China, it is usually very cold at this time of the year when the Chinese welcome the start of Lunar New Year and also to celebrate the start of Spring season (4th Feb). A good way to enjoy the meal with the family members in the cold weather is to have steamboat. Traditional steamboat uses charcoal to set the fire. Everyone will then sit around the table to enjoy the dinner with the heat from the steamboat keeping everyone comfy. This is my version of the story.

Now it is much more convenient to use the electrical steamboat instead of using charcoal. I wonder whether anyone knows why we eat steamboat even in such hot and humid typical Malaysian weather!!! Anyway, looks like it's all set and I am ready to go...

5xmom - Too late di. I didn't know you were coming back yesterday. Hehehe... 15 more days - eat till you scared la.

Joez - Quite big family. This is for 20 persons. 2 pots, one for everyone and another specially for my dad who doesnt eat seafood. But as soon as he finishes his dinner, all the fish balls and the rest will go in.

Letti - Prepare a steamboat meal for David and your inlaws and outlaws lah! Not so difficult to make kua. All the stuff are available in supermarkets.... but I dunno about Abilene, Texas.

Now that is what I call real, good food!!! Here in Michigan..the closest we have are Tom Yum soup made from the Maggi cubes, with artificial crabmeat, peeled and cooked tiny shrimps (like those they use for Char Kuew Teow), fish fillets and lots of spinach!! Hehe but your photo is good enough for now.
